Wilderness & Ecological Reserves

Avalon Wilderness Reserve

The reserve is open all year round. However, certain activities will be greatly influenced by the season and weather conditions.

Permits are required for various activities, but no fees are charged.

Baccalieu Island Ecological Reserve

There are no fees involved in obtaining scientific research, educational tour, or commercial operator permits. However scientific research permit applications must be submitted to the Parks and Natural Areas Division by March 31 for review by the Seabird Ecological Reserves Advisory Committee.

Baccalieu Island can be accessed year-round, though visiting the sensitive breeding areas is restricted to researchers from April 1 to October 30.

Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve

Permits are required for various activities, but no fees are charged.

The reserve is open all year round. However, certain activities will be greatly influenced by the season and weather conditions.

Note that snowmobiling is not permitted in the caribou winter range from December 15 to March 15. See the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve User's Guide for a map of the winter range of the caribou herd.

Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve

Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve can be accessed year-round and there are no fees associated with visiting the Reserve. Most people visit the reserve during the summer months. This is when most of the plants are in bloom, icebergs and whales appear offshore, and many birds use the Cape for breeding.

There are no fees involved in obtaining scientific research, commercial operator, or educational tour permits.

Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve

There are no fees involved in visiting the reserve or obtaining the various permits. The Interpretation Centre has a gift shop and washrooms.

There are no fees involved in visiting the reserve or obtaining the various permits.

Funk Island Ecological Reserve

There are no fees involved in obtaining scientific research permits. However, scientific research permit applications must be submitted to the Parks and Natural Areas Division by March 31 for review by the Seabird Ecological Reserves Advisory Committee.

Gannet Islands Ecological Reserve

Little Grand Lake Provisional Ecological Reserve

There are no fees involved in visiting the reserve or obtaining the various permits.

Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve

Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve offers official interpretive tours from May to October.

There are currently no fees involved in obtaining the various permits.

Heritage Rivers

Main River

No fees are charged to visit the Main River Canadian Heritage River.

Outfitters, of course, do charge for their commercial services: guiding, float planes, staying at a camp, etc. Fees vary.

Angling and hunting dates vary by species; consult the annual Hunting and Fishing Guide produced by Wildlife Division for details.

Winter recreational activities occur from January to May, depending on snow and ice conditions.

Bay du Nord River

Permits are required for various activities in the reserves, but no fees are charged. Permits are not required in the Lower River Zone, outside the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve's borders.

The Bay du Nord Heritage River Corridor is open year-round. However, certain activities will be greatly influenced by the season and weather conditions.

Note that snowmobiling is not permitted in the caribou winter range from December 15 to March 15. See the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve User's Guide for a map of the winter range of the caribou herd.
