On October 23, 2017, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined by members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture (NLFA), Food First NL, Ministers of the Cabinet Committee on Jobs, community, academic and business leaders, and university students for the launch of 43 actions that will promote new careers and bright futures in agriculture in our province. This announcement was made at the Agriculture Industry Summit in Wooddale, NL.
The Provincial Government, NLFA and Food First NL share a goal to double the province’s food self-sufficiency to at least 20 per cent by 2022. Achieving this target, will generate an additional 500 person years of employment. In addition to pursuing positive employment and economic outcomes, the Provincial Government is also placing priority on increasing the level of fruits and vegetables consumed by Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and promoting the province as a world class destination for berries, bees, saltwater lamb and organic products.
As part of The Way Forward vision, the Provincial Government is directly engaging the agriculture, aquaculture and technology sectors to address industry needs in ways that result in new employment and economic activity throughout the province. Download the work plan here.
